The Host Netherlands Won by Blanking Japan, 2-0 at 28th Edition of Honkbalweek Haarlem


Australia, Chinese Taipei, Curacao, Japan and the host Netherlands joined the 28th edition of the Haarlem Baseball Week at the Pim Mulierstadion for 10 days from July 15 and the host Netherlands won the pennant by defeating Japan 2-0 at the final game on Sunday July 24. Chinese Taipei claimed 3rd place, followed by Australia and Curaso.

In the bottom of 7th inning of the final game, the Netherlands scored two runs by two hits and an error. Urbanus singled to right field from Pitcher Yanagi after one out, and Van del Meer singled up the middle after two out advancing to second on on the error sending Urbans to home on a fielding error by centerfield. After Van der Meer advanced to third on a passed ball, he scored on a wild pitch by Ojima who pitched for Yanagi.

Team Japan comprised College All Stars of Tokyo Big-6 League: The University of Tokyo, Rikkio, Waseda, Keio, Meiji and Hosei. Five players who played at the 40th USA-Japan International Collegiate Series in Japan joined their colleagues in Netherlands immediately after finishing the five-game series on July 17. They were Yanagi, Tamura, Morikawa, Sato and Onishi.

Ryoya Kaneko of Hosei Univ. was awarded Most Valuable Player and Leading Hitter (.500), and Takuya Kato of Keio Univ. the Lowest Earned Run Average (0.00) and Tatsuhiko Sato of Rikkio Univ. Home Run King.
