Sri Lanka’s First Baseball Ground Officially Opened

(Colombo) Sri Lanka’s first ever baseball facility, the Japan- Sri Lanka Friendship Baseball Ground constructed inside the Mahinda Rajapaksa Stadium, Homagama was officially opened on December 23, 2012 with a unique opening ceremony participated by the Japan Ambassador to Sri Lanka Nobuhito Hobo, Sports Minister Mahindananda Aluthgamage, Education Minister Bandula Gunawardane, Parliamentarians Namal Rajapakasa, Lohan Ratwatte, Presidential Secretariat Chief of Staff Gamini Senarath, Former national rugby captain Yoshitha Rajapaksa and many distinguished invitees.
MP Namal Rajapaksa swung at the first ceremonial pitch thrown by the Ambassador Nobuhito Hobo to mark the opening of new ground. The new baseball ground is a donation by Japan to mark 60 years of bilateral friendship of Japan and Sri Lanka.
An inaugural match between Kanagawa All Star High School team of Japan and Sri Lanka under-19 National Baseball Team was played after the opening, won by Japan 3-0.
