7 sports seek inclusion for 2020 Olympics by IOC
LAUSANNE, Switzerland (AP) -- Leaders of seven sports bodies have made their pitch to the International Olympic Committee for inclusion at the 2020 Summer Games.
Bidders gave presentations to the IOC's program commission Wednesday, following visits by an Olympic delegation to their top-level events.
The newly merged baseball and softball confederation is competing with karate, roller sports, squash, sport climbing, wakeboard and wushu for one place on the 2020 slate.
The program panel will deliver a report to a May meeting of the IOC Executive Board, which is set to recommend a sport for inclusion.
A final vote of IOC members will confirm the successful candidate at their annual gathering in September, in Buenos Aires.
The 2020 Olympics host will be chosen at the same meeting. The candidates are Istanbul, Madrid and Tokyo.
