COPABE President and Dominican baseball leader Hector ‘Tito’ Pereyra, 58, passes away
The world of international baseball mourns the loss of Hector Pereyra, who passed away on Thursday, 23 May, at the age of 58, days before his 59th birthday. Early reports indicate that he suffered a heart attack.
Pereyra was born in La Vega, Dominican Republic, on 27 May 1960. He earned a degree in the commercial area and worked for the Economic Eaters (Comedores Económicos) of the State of the Dominican Republic, an institution that assists the most vulnerable sectors of the Country.
Affectionally known as Tito, he was a talented writer and speaker who devoted his professional life to baseball. In 2018 he was elected to his seventh term as the President the National Baseball Federation (FEDOBE).
In 2013 he was a key to the building of the team that won the World Baseball Classic, which crowned his homeland Dominican Republic the World Champions in baseball for the first time since 1948.
Pereyra had served since 2017 as the President of the Pan American Confederation (COPABE) and was the Americas Continental Vice President on the WBSC Baseball Division Board.
“I am shocked and deeply saddened on the passing of Hector Tito Pereyra, a passionate baseball leader of the American continent and long-time friend,” said WBSC President Riccardo Fraccari. “This is a tremendous loss to the international baseball movement as well as to our sport in his homeland Dominican Republic. On behalf of the World Baseball Softball family, I send my deepest condolences and prayers to his family, friends, colleagues and all those who will miss him.”
