WBSC mourns loss of Mexican Baseball leader Alonso Perez
LAUSANNE, Switzerland September 10, 2016 – WBSC Baseball Division 1st Vice President Alonso Perez Gonzalez passed away Friday night in Monterrey, Mexico, at the age of 72.
In addition to his role at the world governing body, Mr. Perez was elected as president of the Americas Continent (“Pan-Am Baseball Confederation”) in 2015 and also served as president of the Mexican Baseball Federation for over 30 years, organising and hosting several continental and world championships during his tenure.
“This is an extremely sad and shocking day for our sport,” said WBSC President Riccardo Fraccari. “Baseball has lost a knowledgeable sports leader who helped organise the growth of international baseball competitions and national competitions in Mexico. Not only was Alonso a lifelong friend of our sport, serving the administration and development of baseball in Mexico, the Americas and internationally for over 30 years, he was a personal friend of mine and trusted colleague. He will be missed very much. On behalf of the World Baseball Softball family, the WBSC Executive Board, and in my name personally, I send our deepest condolences to Alonso’s wife Norma, and his entire family and friends, as well as to the Baseball Movement in the Americas.”
